I was born in 1984, in a very poor family, my parent family was rich but everything was destroyed after Khmer Rouge in 1975-1979. My mother is a orphan ( all her parent was killed in Khmer Rouge ). My parent move to Koh Konh province (close to
However is not easy to be parent and raising nine children with empty hand. If I hungry my parent always feed me first, if I want to play I play, have fun with many different neighbor, I never worry about anything because I am a child. I remember one day my father gone to cut the wood on the mountain as usual but this time he went for very short time. Normally he gone for one to three months, but this time he come back after three days, when he arrived home at late night it’s was very heavy rain and he seem sick. The next day my father was very sick he had Malaria, that time my family don’t have any money to take him to see doctor, therefore my mother has to go out to work to make some money to support all of us including my father ( That time my parent have four children only ). My mother and my Anti who living in pagoda now, started make some rice cake to sale for people. Their rice cake was very good and selling well but only enough for living day by day, if they don’t go to sell rice cake one day we will have nothing to eat the next day.
Seven days later my father get up at middle of the night, taking an axe, big knife, and carry a big bag that he always carry when he go to mountain to cut the wood. My mother asked him, what are you doing in the middle of the night? My father said I have to go to cut some wood so that we can have some money. My mother said: but you are sick! if you go, you can die! My father said: I have this dream, if I go to cut the wood now we will be rich… all I have to do is to walk to mountain and three step lift cut the wood, then three step back cut the wood then we will be rich!. My mother was thought that my father very sick and getting insane, she tries to stop my father again and again but my father keep going anyway.
The next day when I get up didn’t see my father, and it’s make me wonder because he sick, he suppose to sleeping on the floor in the house. I asked my mother, where is daddy? My mother replied with her sad face: daddy go out to fine money, so that you can have a good food to eat. I never forget what my mother said to me, but I was too young to bother about all this problem, all I can do is cry if I hungry, cry if they don’t let me do what I want to do.
After three days my father get back home, with a lot of woods and have a very beautiful smell…that time I don’t what is the wood for, but now I know this wood that he had cut is very special, it’s to make medicine, perfume …etc…
In 1990 my father became one of the richest people in Koh Kong province, from selling special wood to
In 1998 this rich family no longer rich, because my father forget who he is? Where he from? How he get rich? My mother spends money on thing that should not spend, and both of them starting gambling. My father having many beautiful young girls, because he has money to pay for them… and they both starting having a lot of friends, gone out every nights, left the their children at home with house keepers’. When my father was poor, he doesn’t know many people, and many people doesn’t want to know him, when he rich there are many people around go and come all the times, always seem very busy…
Is money making friends? It’s depend who you ask, if I the one who answer this question, my answer is NO. Money make other people like you, want to be your friends but they are not friends because they only come when you have money and they automatically disappeared after your money gone.
A lot of people said, money is not everything. I hundred percents agree with that, but also I believe without money not much thing can done.
That’s what happened to my father. Now he very poor and not even have job, his daughter supporting him, giving him money every months. He still hope to have one more chance to get up from his bed, walk three steps of the house, he becomes rich again.
What will he do this time if wake up and becomes rich again? Will he learn the lesson? I asked him this question, his answer is: I will buy a car!, and buy good food for your brothers sisters to eat everyday, go to club have a young girl massage for me… and hire people to do the house work, do every things and buy everything I wants.
Good luck daddy!
Is this the right answer after people become rich?
Why doesn’t he try to keep and manage his money to make more money so that he will not become poor again? Why the first thing that he wants is car but not a family? What about the people who look after him when he poor? for example me.
Is everyone should learn from their mistake? Or should they forget about their mistake a try not to make another mistake in the future?

Great article Hong. What else are you going to write about. I would like to read the story about the Chinese guy ... can that be told?
His story is scary for me, I have to think about that, maybe not a good time to share his story yet. Thanks for the comment.
